Question 10: Enterprise 2007 Responses

Executives were mixed about their prediction of where the software industry will be in 2017. Nearly one-third said the business will still be reinventing itself and focused on innovation. Another fifth of respondents predicted another growth phase. Other respondents weren't as optimistic, forecasting a phase of consolidation and maturation. The findings illustrate how the "unknown" has always been one of the most exciting things about the software industry.

The true test of faith in the software business of the next decade: Would today's software business leaders encourage their own college-aged children to pursue a career in the industry? Fully 58 percent said "yes" and "29%" said "no".

The Teen Test: Enterprise 2007 Responses

Sure, more than half of attendees - executives and investors who have achieved tremendous success in the software business today - would guide their offspring down the same road - but nearly one-third would not advise a career in software.

However, considering the massive vendor upheaval, significant innovation, continued investment and ever-changing technology landscape, most business leaders agree that few industries will rival the excitement and challenges that will be presented by the next decade of the software business.
