The Trials of Today's CEO

As CEOs look to effectively manage their companies in today's challenging economic climate, their need for independent advice is greater than ever.

CEOs know: It is lonely at the top. The challenges of running a company, meeting investor expectations, managing employees, and communicating effectively with the board is no small task - even in the best of times. Today's global financial crisis and domestic recession don't make things easier.

Our new poll shows that, indeed, CEOs are struggling as they guide their company's through an unstable economy. The constant flow of business challenges greatly enhances the need for CEOs to get independent advice from peers and other experts outside their companies.

Today's Business Climate
CEOs are working overtime to deal with the economic challenges of today. A poll of top executives on ExpertCEO finds nearly two-thirds of executives are worried about running out of cash and more than half say it is the no.1 reason they lose sleep. Another 43 percent of respondents say they're afraid they'll miss their sales forecast and one-third are concerned about having to lay off employees (see chart).



Half of CEOs say their companies were already suffering from the economic downturn during Q3 but another third say their company had yet to be affected. Overall, more than three-fourths of respondents expected the crisis to last longer than three quarters (see charts.)
